Travel time: paying travel for a job site

For owners and managers2 min readUpdated

A job site can pay travel on top of the hours worked. Two places set it. The company setting: Menu → Rules → Travel time. Choose None or Pay travel, then Time (any length: 30 minutes, 3 hours, 4 hours 30, paid at each person's own hourly rate) or a Flat amount (the same dollars for everyone who gets it). It applies to every job site that has no setting of its own.

One job site: open the job site and choose Travel time. It can pay None, the Company setting, or Its own amount. "Who gets it" is chosen there too: Everyone, Everyone except (the people picked do not get it; someone new gets it until left out), or Only (the people picked get it; someone new does not until added).

When the job site is on the map, the app suggests who lives within 30 km so the local people can be left out with one tap; it is only a suggestion, and the list is what counts, so nobody's pay changes because an address was edited.

The rules: paid once per person, per day, at a job site; only when the shift was worked (a no-show, a cancelled shift and a sign-out without pay pay none); people on a salary are not paid travel; it is decided when the person is signed out and saved on that time record with their rate, so a later change to the setting never changes a shift already worked.

Lowering or removing travel tells the people with shifts still to come. One person, one shift: on the shift's timesheet, the Travel section lists who is paid travel; someone who may change recorded times taps a signed-in person to pay more, less, none, or go back to the job site's setting, always with a reason, and the person is told.

Overtime: travel time does NOT count toward overtime unless "Travel time counts toward overtime" is switched on in the company setting; a flat amount never does.

Where it shows: the worker sees Travel on the offer, the shift and the Pay tab (someone left out sees nothing about it); the employer sees it on the timesheet, the timesheet downloads and the Payroll summary (Travel hours and Travel pay, part of estimated gross pay); the client sees nothing unless "Show travel to the client" is switched on for that job site, and then only the travel hours (or that travel was paid), never dollars.

The app does not pay anyone.
